Temporary Housing Assistance

The municipality is required to help you find a temporary place to stay if you do not have a place to sleep and live for the next 24 hours.

Description

If you have an urgent need for housing and are unable to secure accommodation on your own, the municipality is obligated to provide you with temporary housing. Families with children, as well as children and young people, must be offered safe and adequate housing. This service is not generally available to individuals struggling with substance abuse.

Criteria/conditions

You must be in an emergency housing situation.

Charges/Cost of the service

The service is free of charge, but if you have the financial means, you may be required to contribute to the rent.

Acts

This is a legally mandated service. See sosialtjenesteloven § 27

Forvaltningsloven
Sosialtjenesteloven

Guidelines – applying for, or receiving the service

If you have an urgent need for housing, contact your nearest NAV-office, or the municipality's service desk.

Time taken to consider the application

The NAV office must process your request as quickly as possible. In cases of urgent, temporary housing needs, a decision is typically required on the same day.

Possibilities to appeal; procedure

If NAV rejects your application, you can appeal within three weeks of receiving the decision. Explain what you are dissatisfied with and why you believe the decision should be changed. If you need guidance, you can contact NAV. If NAV upholds its decision, the case will be forwarded to the County Governor, who will determine whether the appeal should be granted.
