Home Schooling

Parents may choose to provide their child with education at home. This is called private primary education at home. The education must follow the same curriculum as public schools.

Description

As a parent, you can choose to provide your child with primary education at home.

How to Proceed

  1. Inform the school that you wish to withdraw your child from school and provide private education at home.
  2. Develop a plan to ensure the education follows the national curriculum.
  3. Home education is required to follow the same educational objectives as stated in the Education Act § 1-3. Prepare a plan for how you will document adherence to these principles.
  4. Ensure compliance with requirements for subjects and hours (Education Act § 1-6).
  5. The Education Act mandates that students receive knowledge about religions and worldviews but prohibits the promotion of any single religion as part of the education. Prepare a plan for how religious and worldview education will be conducted.

Within three months after home education has started, the municipality will conduct an inspection. During the inspection, the municipality will verify that the educational requirements are being met. One way to check this is by requiring the child to take tests. If the municipality determines that the child is not receiving the required education, it may mandate that the child attend school.

Target group

Parents of primary school students.

Criteria/conditions

  • The education must be provided at home.
  • The parents must be responsible for the education.
  • The municipality must be able to conduct inspections.

Charges/Cost of the service

The free education principle in schools does not apply to private home education. This means that parents cannot demand that the municipality cover costs for learning materials or activities such as museum visits.

This is a legally required service. See in particular:
