Education for Residents in Asylum Reception Centers
If you are a newly arrived asylum seeker, you are entitled to education about Norwegian society, laws, regulations, values, and culture.
If you are over 18 years old and living in an asylum reception center, you are required to participate in this education.
Description
As a newly arrived immigrant in an asylum reception center, you will receive training on how Norwegian society functions and how to adapt to life in Norway. The municipality must ensure that this education is provided as soon as possible after you are registered in a reception center within the municipality.
Target group
You are an asylum seeker over the age of 18.
Criteria/conditions
You are not required to participate in the education if:
- Your application is processed under the accelerated procedure
- Your application is not considered for substantive review
- You are living in an arrival center or transit reception center
- Your asylum application has been rejected
Charges/Cost of the service
This service is free of charge.

Time taken to consider the application
The municipality is obligated to provide the course as early as possible after arrival to the reception centre.
Possibilities to appeal; procedure
You can appeal a decision regarding:
- Rejection of an application for exemption
This must be done within three weeks from the date you received the decision. Explain what you are dissatisfied with and why you believe the decision should be changed. If you need guidance, you can contact the municipality. If the municipality upholds its decision, the case will be forwarded to the County Governor, who will determine whether the appeal is upheld.
