Adaptive education
All students have the right to an education that is tailored to their needs and potential. This means that teachers must monitor each student’s progress and make adjustments throughout their schooling.
Description
Some students learn quickly and need a broader curriculum or a higher level of difficulty than their peers. Others may require additional developmental support in certain subjects or for a period of time. It is the school’s responsibility to monitor and support each student so that they can fully develop their abilities.
In most cases, students receive adapted education within the regular classroom environment, without the need for special arrangements. Some of the adaptations that teachers may implement include:
Intensive Instruction
For students in grades 1 to 4, the school will monitor progress in reading, writing, and arithmetic. Since these skills are fundamental for further learning, schools may provide intensive instruction in reading, writing, or arithmetic for students who need extra support.
Exemptions from Certain Parts of the Curriculum
Students who learn faster than average may, in some cases, benefit from skipping a grade or taking subjects at a higher level. This decision must be made by the school in collaboration with an expert assessment from the Pedagogical-Psychological Service (PPT) and with parental consent.
Target group
Students in primary and lower secondary school.
Brochures, documents, maps, etc.
Acts
These are legally mandated services. See:
Opplæringslova § 11-1, § 11-2, § 11-3 og § 28-1.
Guidelines – applying for, or receiving the service
Adaptations and measures implemented by the school to ensure all students benefit from education are part of the school’s responsibilities and professional judgment. Parents do not need to apply for these adjustments.
If you wish to discuss possible adaptations for your child, you can contact the school.
Possibilities to appeal; procedure
Individually adapted education is a duty of the school, but it is not something parents can formally apply for, and therefore, there is no official appeal process. However, if you believe your child is not benefiting sufficiently from their education, you can raise your concerns by requesting a meeting with the child’s teacher or principal.
